Asda Partners with Scottish Shellfish Producers to Launch Premium Mussel Product
Sustainable Scottish mussel production received a significant boost this week as Asda unveiled a new premium product aimed at meeting the growing consumer demand for convenient, healthy, and adventurous seafood options.
Commitment to Sustainability
The newly launched product features mussels that are sustainably rope-grown in the Shetland Islands and along the Scottish mainland. These mussels have been certified under the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) Standard since 2012, ensuring that they are sourced responsibly.
Consumer Research Insights
This innovative offering is a direct result of consumer research conducted by Scottish Shellfish. The study identified barriers that deter shoppers from purchasing seafood and uncovered opportunities to encourage more seafood consumption. It revealed a strong consumer desire for restaurant-quality products in a convenient packaging format that simplifies cooking.
Unique Packaging Concept
The new product features a first-in-market, recyclable bowl with a peelable top seal, designed to maximize shelf life while enhancing user convenience.
Quality and Affordability
Developed collaboratively by Asda and Scottish Shellfish, this offering is part of an expanding range of certified sustainable mussels available in UK supermarkets. Recent reports indicate that around 80% of the 3,500 tonnes of mussels sold in the UK now carry the MSC’s recognizable blue ecolabel.
Product Details
Harriet Hughes, Asda’s Product Development Manager, expressed excitement about the collaboration, stating:
“We are delighted to work in partnership with Scottish Shellfish to develop this new exciting convenient bowl concept of MSC Scottish Rope Grown Mussels with Chorizo in a rich fire-roasted Tomato and Rioja Cream Sauce. The microwaveable bowl offers a quick and flavoursome meal for any occasion and is perfect for Summer Eating!”
Derek Sharp from Scottish Shellfish added:
“Consumers told us they thought of mussels as messy and inconvenient and lacked confidence in how to cook them. We believe Asda has created a product that combines convenience with quality, enabling shoppers to enjoy an exceptional product that is also affordable and sustainable.”
The Environmental Benefits of Mussels
Mussels are recognized as one of the least environmentally harmful sources of protein. They positively impact the surrounding flora and other seafood species while being packed with essential nutrients such as zinc, Vitamin B12, Omega-3 fatty acids, iron, and folic acid.
Younger Consumers Seize the Adventure
Seth McCurry, Senior Commercial Manager for the UK and Ireland at MSC, commented on the findings of consumer research, which indicates that younger demographics are more adventurous in their seafood choices and increasingly concerned about sustainability:
“Products like this new premium one from Asda will help put nutritious and delicious seafood on more plates while supporting an outstanding local, sustainable fishery.”
Broader Range for Seafood Enthusiasts
Asda has also launched a 1kg live mussel product, aimed at more confident seafood cooks, complete with user-friendly instructions for those less familiar with mussel preparation.
Impressive Production Statistics
The MSC certified mussel fishery in Shetland and Scotland produced 11,690 tonnes in 2024, marking a remarkable 13% increase from the previous year.
