Atlantic Cod to Join ASC Certification Programme in 2025
The Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) has announced that Atlantic cod will be launched into its Certification Programme in the fourth quarter of 2025. This decision follows a comprehensive stakeholder consultation conducted from May 20 to June 20, 2025, during which the ASC received invaluable feedback from various players in the industry, including Atlantic cod producers.
Stakeholder Feedback and Support
During the 30-day consultation period, stakeholders provided both data-driven insights and detailed comments, unanimously supporting the integration of Atlantic cod into the ASC Programme. This strong backing highlights the growing recognition of the importance of sustainable practices in aquaculture.

Statement from ASC CEO
Chris Ninnes, ASC’s CEO, stated, “The certification of Atlantic cod marks an important milestone for ASC, demonstrating our ability to respond quickly to market demand for new species. The demand for ASC certified Atlantic cod is growing among both farmers and retailers. By certifying Atlantic cod, ASC is helping to improve farming practices, promote environmental responsibility, and support fair working conditions.”
Regional Importance and Opportunities
The primary focus of the consultation responses came from Norway, which currently has a limited number of cod producers. By integrating cod into the ASC Salmon Standard, farmers in Norway and potential producers in countries like Iceland, Scotland, the Faroe Islands, the wider Nordics, and Canada will have a new avenue to market responsibly farmed cod, especially given recent reductions in wild cod quotas.
“We welcome the inclusion of Atlantic cod in the ASC Certification Programme,” said Tor Olav Seim, Head of Business Development & Founder of Ode, Norway’s largest Atlantic cod producer. “This will enable us to meet the market demand for responsibly farmed cod while promoting sustainability standards.”
What’s Next for Atlantic Cod?
Atlantic cod will be added to the ASC Certification Programme. Initially, this will be facilitated through a modified ASC Salmon Standard, ensuring that farmers can access certification promptly. A two-year transition period will follow, after which cod will be fully integrated into the ASC Farm Standard V1.1, giving farmers the necessary time to adapt.
Many existing criteria in the ASC Salmon Standard are relevant to cod, allowing for a seamless addition. The program aims to address critical sustainability issues, including biodiversity loss, ecosystem impacts, disease management, and resource utilization, thus ensuring responsible and sustainable cod farming practices.
