Cattle Australia Seeks Nominations for Grassfed Cattle Transaction Levy Review Committee
Grassfed cattle producer peak body Cattle Australia is inviting nominations for qualified individuals to join a dedicated committee aimed at overseeing a long-awaited review of the cattle transaction levy.
Committee Composition
The committee will consist of five producers—two from the southern region, two from the northern region, and one from the western region. Additionally, two independent committee members will join two Cattle Australia Directors on the Grassfed Cattle Transaction Levy Review Committee. This group is tasked with engaging with the industry and gathering opinions on the current levy program.
Over the next 10 months, the Committee will oversee the review process and make recommendations, which will be presented to levy payers for voting during the Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) annual general meeting in November 2026.
Importance of Producer Involvement
Will Evans, CEO of Cattle Australia, emphasized the importance of producer input throughout this crucial review to ensure the levy can continue to support vital initiatives in industry research, development, marketing, and biosecurity.
“This is a key opportunity for individuals with suitable knowledge and expertise to help drive this long-overdue review of the levy program,” Mr. Evans noted.
Committee members are expected to possess a deep understanding of the issues relevant to their production area, as well as knowledge of the objectives and functions of both Cattle Australia and MLA. Furthermore, skills-based appointments will include independent specialists in research and development corporations and experts in government systems to ensure a comprehensive skill set within the committee.
Call for Review
Cattle Australia had previously called for a review of the cattle transaction levy earlier this year. Discussions at the recent Cattle Connect event in Dalby indicated widespread support within the industry for this review.
“The last change to the levy occurred in 2006, and the last review was in 2009, despite a declaration at the time that it should be reviewed every three years,” Mr. Evans explained. “It’s now almost 2026 and driving this review is one of CA’s highest priorities to ensure our industry is best positioned for future success.”
Application Details
Interested applicants can submit their CV and cover letter via email to ctl.secretariat@cattleaustralia.com.au. The deadline for applications is January 19, with announcements of successful candidates to follow shortly thereafter.
