John Kerry Joins Ocean Stewardship Initiative as New Champion
The Ocean Stewardship Initiative (OSI) has recently appointed former US Secretary of State John Kerry as its latest “champion.” This pivotal role aligns with OSI’s mission to drive global ocean-centered sustainability efforts.
About the Ocean Stewardship Initiative
Launched on March 11 in London, UK, the OSI operates under the umbrella of the Sustainable Markets Initiative (SMI), founded in 2020 by the UK’s King Charles III. This private-sector initiative aims to fulfill worldwide commitments focused on safeguarding ocean environments.
Focusing on Marine Protected Areas
One of the key areas of focus for OSI is the establishment of a large-scale marine protected area (MPA) in Antarctica, complemented by science-based fisheries management. The initiative has garnered support from the Marine Stewardship Council as well as top Antarctic krill companies Aker BioMarine and Aker QRILL.
OSI is advocating for the approval of the Antarctic Peninsula MPA, which is proposed to span 455,957 square kilometers. This expansive area would encompass 70% of the Antarctic Peninsula’s waters and increase the protected waters in this critical region by up to 15%.
Updating Fisheries Management
In addition to advocating for the MPA, OSI aims to revise the management framework for the Antarctic krill fishery. This effort seeks to enhance ecosystem monitoring and redistribute fishing efforts across open fishing areas, ensuring the sustainability of this vital marine resource.
Kerry’s Vision for Global Collaboration
As the new champion, John Kerry will spearhead initiatives aimed at fostering collaboration between world leaders and business executives with the goal of embedding sustainability at the core of global economic activities.
“I’m proud to use my experience to help governments, NGOs, and the private sector pull together for our ocean,” Kerry stated in a press release. “Collaboration brings results. Conflict brings the opposite. If we want progress that lasts, we have to work together and show proof.”
A Model for Sustainable Fisheries Management
The SMI has indicated that its Antarctic campaign will serve as a crucial test case for developing an industry-led framework that could be applied to sustainable fisheries management and marine protection initiatives in various regions across the globe, as reported by UCCN.
