MORE than 1,600 head of cattle have embarked on a significant journey across the stock routes of Western Queensland, aiming to raise funds to provide meals for the homeless and disadvantaged. This initiative, known as the Great Australian Cattle Drive, has been in planning since 2022.
The drive will see a herd of cattle moving from Longreach to Roma, with funds raised supporting Beef Bank, a charity that supplies primarily beef to Foodbank, assisting those in need throughout Australia.
Initially launched at the Queensland Rural Press Club breakfast during last year’s Beef 2024 event in Rockhampton, the undertaking involves 1,680 cattle owned by McDonald Holdings and Richmond-based agents Luke and Sara Westaway.
Guided by experienced drovers Billy and Amanda Prow, the herd departed from Longreach at the beginning of this week, with plans to reach Barcaldine by next week and ultimately arriving in Roma by August.
A Commitment to Community Care
Beef Bank board member and event organiser Bim Struss emphasized the importance of this cause, stating, “As a nation, we have a responsibility to look after these people.” He noted that providing decent meals can help restore a sense of dignity and normality to those in need.
Seeking More Volunteers
While the event has generated substantial support, Mr. Struss mentioned the need for additional volunteers to assist in moving equipment along the route.
“We will provide food and accommodation for volunteers who can camp in their vans and help ensure the event runs smoothly,” he added, praising the previous champions of the Millmerran Camp Oven Festival for their catering contributions.
Encouraging Tourism and Community Involvement
Mr. Struss highlighted that the cattle drive isn’t just about fundraising; it also aims to promote tourism in Western Queensland. “We are inviting tourists to join us along the route, enjoying meals together and engaging with the local community,” he explained.

Fundraising Events and Opportunities
As the cattle make their way to Roma, they will be returned to their donors, reintegrating them into their respective supply chains. Various fundraisers and events are concurrently underway, including:
- A raffle for a trip for six in a Pilatus PC-12 aircraft, touring iconic cattle stations in Queensland’s Gulf Country, culminating in a white tablecloth dinner and fishing trip in Karumba.
- Tickets to support the cattle drive.
- A series of events such as the Crawchie Pot Concert in Barcaldine next Friday, the Bulldust and Sequins Ball in Blackall on June 8, and Morven’s Murweh Showcase on July 20.
