US consumers are increasingly worried about what they encounter in the supermarket. Either there are no eggs on the shelves or they are priced up to a dollar each.
People are panic buying and even stealing what has become a pricey commodity. Eggs are so expensive right now because multiple avian influenza outbreaks have suddenly significantly reduced the supply of eggs. The virus killed about 17.2 million egg-laying hens in November and December 2024 and another 8 million in January 2025.
The US Department of Agriculture estimated that egg prices may increase by about 20% in 2025, compared to about 2.2% for food prices in general, according to its price outlook. At the farm level, market experts expect to see a price level of US$ 3.29 per 10 large-sized eggs.
