Innovafeed Joins the Avoided Emissions Platform: A New Era for Decarbonisation Solutions
Innovafeed contributes to the ‘Avoided Emissions Platform’ (AEP), an initiative aimed at measuring avoided emissions (‘scope 4’) across 65 sectors.
A Milestone in Low-Carbon Solutions
This initiative marks a significant advancement in showcasing low-carbon solutions, such as insect-based innovations, backed by transparent and scientifically consolidated data. The AEP recognizes the insect sector as a tangible approach to decarbonisation and highlights Innovafeed’s industrial symbiosis model, which combines large-scale insect ingredient production with a minimal carbon footprint.
About the Avoided Emissions Platform (AEP)
Recently, the Avoided Emissions Platform (AEP) was officially launched. This global initiative is spearheaded by recognized entities including Quantis, Robeco, Mirova, Edmond de Rothschild AM, and I Care by BearingPoint, with support from over 30 partners. The AEP establishes a transparent, rigorous, and harmonized methodology for measuring avoided emissions across diverse sectors, from energy and agriculture to industry, real estate, and food systems.
Innovafeed’s Role in the AEP
As a global leader in insect-based protein and recognized as B Corp™, Next 40, and Impact 40, Innovafeed is proud to be included in this independent database, which is built on robust Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) data. This project exemplifies how public initiatives can utilize scientific data and operational expertise provided by specialized industrial players like Innovafeed to objectively evaluate the real impact of innovative solutions.
Quote from Innovafeed’s CEO
Clément Ray, CEO and Co-founder of Innovafeed, stated: “Insects are a forward-looking, measurable, and high-impact solution for transforming our agri-food system. Through our circular model, we upcycle agricultural by-products into sustainable ingredients, significantly reducing CO₂ emissions. The AEP represents a crucial milestone in providing the most up-to-date data on the real-world impact of our solutions.”
Building a Scientific Foundation Through Collaboration
Innovafeed’s involvement in the AEP is a result of extensive collaboration with Quantis, a leading environmental consultancy specializing in LCA. Pierre Collet, Global Footprint Lead at Quantis, emphasized the importance of using common methodologies to assess environmental impacts. He noted, “The AEP embodies this collective ambition: by standardizing the measurement of avoided emissions, it strengthens the credibility of climate solutions—like Innovafeed’s—and helps channel financial flows toward the most virtuous companies.”
A Key Milestone for the Insect Sector
The recognition of the insect protein sector in a neutral, science-based reference platform has received positive feedback from institutional representatives. Christophe Derrien, Secretary General of the International Platform of Insects for Food and Feed (IPIFF), remarked: “This initiative marks a foundational step for the European insect protein industry. The AEP’s work provides scientific validation of the insect sector’s potential as a lever for emissions reduction in agriculture and food—a critical issue for the European Green Deal.”
A Strong Signal for Impact-Driven Investment
The accurate measurement of companies’ climate contributions is becoming essential in guiding investment portfolios. By providing a transparent, science-based framework for quantifying avoided emissions, the AEP assists investors in identifying and supporting the most effective solutions in the battle against climate change. The inclusion of sectors like insect protein highlights the maturity of nature-based and circular economy models, reinforcing their significance in sustainable investment strategies.
About the ‘Avoided Emissions Platform’
The Avoided Emissions Platform is an interactive digital tool that allows users to model the avoided emission factors of 65 climate solutions. Its open and transparent methodology is overseen by an independent scientific committee. The goal is to equip companies, investors, and public decision-makers with a harmonized framework for measuring actual contributions towards carbon neutrality.
