The Produce Industry Podcast: A Conversation with Liz Sertl of GS1 US

In this week’s episode of The Produce Industry Podcast with Patrick Kelly, we are joined by Liz Sertl, Senior Director of Community Engagement at GS1 US. If you’re not familiar with GS1 US, it’s a pivotal global supply chain standards organization supporting over 2.5 million companies that handle more than 10 billion transactions daily, using its standards. Some of the most recognizable standards include the Global Trade Item Number (GTIN), the UPC barcode, the GS1 128 barcode—which growers and packers utilize for shipping—and the Global Location Number.

Liz Sertl carries with her more than 20 years of experience in the Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) industry. During this episode, we delve into her vital role and the incredible impact that GS1 standards have on supply chain efficiency.

About Liz Sertl

  • Liz facilitates best practices and guidelines aimed at helping companies enhance product traceability and supply chain visibility through the adoption of GS1 Standards.
  • Before joining GS1 US, Liz spent over a decade at Anheuser-Busch, where she led e-business solutions and packaging initiatives, driving the company’s adoption of GS1 Standards for better supply chain efficiency and partner relationships.

GS1 US operates as a not-for-profit organization, driven by industry needs and designed to provide a neutral platform for businesses. This unique status allows industry stakeholders to unite and discuss crucial supply chain and regulatory issues collaboratively. A significant current focus is the compliance of all supply chain parties with the FSMA 204 final rule published by the FDA in November. Companies have until January 2026 to meet this compliance, prompting the industry to mobilize efforts to ensure that everyone understands their responsibilities moving forward.
