Recent studies highlight the potential of enhanced water technology to improve poultry and pig production while benefiting the environment.

Innovative Technology from Oxcel

British agri-tech company Oxcel has obtained promising results from its
Innovate UK-funded trials in collaboration with Scotland’s Rural College
(SRUC) and the UK Agri-Tech Centre.

What is Water-as-a-Service (WaaS)?

The WaaS model has been tested in commercial farms across Eastern England and at SRUC. This innovative nanobubble system
significantly increases the dissolved oxygen in ordinary drinking water, enhancing its quality without disrupting existing farm infrastructure.

Advantages of Oxygen-Enhanced Drinking Water

The trials confirmed that oxygen-enhanced drinking water brings substantial improvements to broiler welfare. Key benefits include:

  • Reduction in hock burns and white striping.
  • Improvement in feather condition and gut health.
  • Increased protein production.

Supported by Innovate UK-funded research at SRUC, these findings indicate that enhancing animal welfare can align with profit growth.

A Commitment to Sustainable Production

Alex Leigh, CEO of Oxcel, emphasized that the technology plays a crucial role in advancing sustainable practices within intensive livestock sectors.
“Farmers are the backbone of the food system,” Leigh stated. “Our goal is to assist them in producing healthier animals,
achieving better profits, and minimizing environmental impacts. Our user-friendly technology seamlessly integrates with existing setups,
helping to accelerate sustainable farming practices.”

The Importance of Water Quality

Dr. Farina Khattak, an applied poultry nutrition professor at SRUC, noted, “Water quality is essential for animal health but is often neglected.
Our research indicates that oxygen-enriched water can dramatically enhance both welfare and meat quality, providing farmers with a
practical, non-pharmaceutical solution to elevate production standards.”

Future Directions

The next steps involve expanding partnerships within the farming community. Oxcel is currently seeking investors to scale its patent-pending technology
both within the UK and internationally. For information on partnerships or investments, please contact info@ukagritechcentre.com.
