Transformative Modernisation Initiatives at Peterhead Port
Peterhead Port has announced an ambitious modernisation plan, which includes six new processing units, a cutting-edge e-auction platform, and a £3.5 million ice plant. This progressive step aims to bolster their seafood processing capabilities and enhance overall service efficiency.
Investment in Infrastructure
The Peterhead Port Authority (PPA) is committed to improving its facilities for various fish processing activities within its expansive estate. As part of its ethos, the authority continually seeks advancements in infrastructure.
Currently, the PPA is inviting expressions of interest for the rental of six contemporary fish processing units located at the former Mapco facility at Gerries Yard, strategically close to Europe’s largest fish market. These units are set to become available in early 2026, replacing the existing units on Albert Street and Volum Street, which will be decommissioned in due course.
Future-Proofing with E-Auction Platform
In addition to these physical upgrades, the PPA will introduce an e-auction system in the fish market in early 2026 to replace traditional shout auctions. This electronic platform will broaden access for various processors to source fish more efficiently from Peterhead.
Following a decision by the PPA Board, the cloud-based platform KOSMOS, developed by Aucxis, has been chosen to implement this new system. Aucxis specializes in e-trade solutions and has a robust history of facilitating successful e-auctions globally, with over 150 currently operational in various sectors, including seafood.
Laying the Groundwork for Success
Graeme Reid, PPA Chief Executive Officer, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership with Aucxis, noting their expertise has been invaluable in advancing this project. He stated, “We are focused on ensuring Peterhead fish market becomes the leading e-auction market in Europe, solidifying our position as the continent’s premier fish port.”
The implementation of KOSMOS will begin with a thorough analysis of current processes, followed by system integration and testing phases in collaboration with PPA stakeholders. Specialised hardware, including mobile input devices, label printers, and auctioneer headsets, will support the transition to this new digital platform.
Enhanced Ice Production Facilities
In addition to the e-auction platform, a new £3.5 million ice-making plant has been established at Peterhead Port, enhancing support for both the catching and processing sectors. Located on Greenhill Quay next to the fish market, this facility offers improved efficiency and accessibility compared to the two older plants it replaces.
The new ice plant allows for safer and more convenient loading for lorries and vessels, ensuring that ice supplies are available at all tidal states, thus supporting ongoing operations in seafood processing.
Conclusion
These modernisation efforts highlight Peterhead Port’s commitment to innovation and leadership in the seafood processing industry, ensuring that it remains competitive while fostering future growth.
