PFerrinX Sets to Revolutionize Lactoferrin Production with Precision Fermentation
Emerging as a frontrunner in the precision fermentation space, PFerrinX boasts a significant technological advancement that allows for precise control of iron saturation levels in lactoferrin, enhancing its protein functionality. This novel approach positions the startup for successful commercialization in a rapidly expanding market.
The Benefits of Lactoferrin
Lactoferrin, an iron-binding, anti-microbial protein naturally present in mammalian milk, is celebrated for its multiple health benefits. Its accessibility has historically been limited due to high costs associated with isolating it from cow’s milk, which can reach upwards of $650 per kilo. This opens up vast opportunities for precision fermentation firms looking to explore markets beyond conventional infant formula.
A Growing Landscape of Startups
Numerous startups, including Vivici, All G, TurtleTree, Helaina, Eclipse Ingredients, PFx Biotech, Daisy Labs, and Noumi, are venturing into animal-free lactoferrin production using microbial processes. However, PFerrinX sets itself apart as a joint venture between Earth First Food Ventures Ltd (EFFV) and De Novo Foodlabs, aiming to become the world’s largest and lowest-cost producer.
According to De Novo Foodlabs CSO Leah Bessa: “The iron saturation level of lactoferrin is a defining factor that dictates its specific function and interactions within the human body.” PFerrinX’s focus on mastering this variable enables customization of its branded ingredient, NanoFerrin™, for diverse market sectors, from infant formula to immunity supplements.
Production Capabilities and Distinct Profiles
PFerrinX aims to create three distinct lactoferrin profiles and has already secured manufacturing sites in both the EU and Asia, expected to be operational by 2027 and 2029, respectively.
- Apo-lactoferrin (0% iron saturation): This iron-free variant boosts immunity, gut health, and is beneficial for cosmetics and oral care. It acts as an antioxidant and prebiotic, starving harmful bacteria by binding free iron.
De Novo Foodlabs CEO Jean Louwrens notes, “In cosmetics, iron-free lactoferrin provides a powerful antioxidant benefit while preventing iron-induced oxidation and discoloration.” Additionally, it promises a guarantee of pure apo-lactoferrin’s potent antimicrobial activity for immunity supplements.
- Native lactoferrin (~10% iron saturation): Functions as the industry standard for infant nutrition, mimicking the typical iron content found in bovine milk with reduced batch variability.
- Holo-lactoferrin (100% iron saturation): Serves as a gentle, high-bioavailability iron delivery system, presenting a viable alternative to traditional iron supplements that often cause digestive issues.
The Challenges of Iron Saturation
Competing firms, like Alpine Bio, are also producing lactoferrin with varying levels of iron saturation. However, Louwrens emphasizes the intricacies involved in managing iron levels during microbial production without compromising protein efficacy.
Unmatched Production Capacity
PFerrinX has secured long-term contracts for two manufacturing sites, boasting a total capacity of 200 metric tons, which can potentially increase to 400 metric tons based on the productivity of its yeast strains. According to EFFV CEO Brian Ruszczyk, ongoing regulatory submissions with major global partners are underway.
“We aim to produce at comparable costs to dairy but without the capacity constraints, and we project being able to significantly undercut dairy costs within the next two years,” Ruszczyk stated.
Market Potential
The lactoferrin market is estimated to be opaque with approximately 850 tons produced annually across 42 facilities worldwide. The largest producer, based in Asia, generates about 170 tons each year. Predicting significant growth, Ruszczyk believes the market could easily triple or quintuple over the coming decades, especially as PFerrinX becomes more competitive due to lower production costs.
