Princes Expands Tinned Fish Portfolio with New ‘Ocean Select’ MSC-Certified Yellowfin Tuna Steaks
Princes Group is making waves in the culinary world with the launch of its premium ‘Ocean Select’ range, featuring MSC-certified Yellowfin Tuna Steaks. These new offerings are set to grace the shelves of Tesco across the UK starting from 4th May.
Introducing ‘Ocean Select’
The ‘Ocean Select’ line promises to bring Mediterranean-inspired flavours to the forefront, catering to consumers eager to enhance their at-home dining experiences without breaking the bank.
Available Flavours
The Princes Ocean Select Yellowfin Tuna Steaks will be offered in two delightful flavours:
- Yellowfin Tuna Steak in Olive Oil with Lemon, 160g (RRP: £2.75)
- Yellowfin Tuna Steak in Olive Oil with Sweet Chilli, 160g (RRP: £2.75)
Quality and Sustainability
This new product range utilizes Yellowfin tuna, appreciated for its milder and softer texture, which is typically served fresh. However, Princes is pioneering this category with their first ambient option, attracting consumers who prioritize quality, sustainability, and versatile flavours.
Every can will feature the MSC blue ecolabel, assuring customers that their tuna is sourced responsibly. Princes has achieved a significant milestone by sourcing 100% from MSC-certified fisheries, positioning itself as the first brand in the UK to do so. This commitment not only supports global marine conservation goals but also responds to an increasing consumer demand for sustainably sourced seafood.
Since setting this ambitious target in 2022, Princes has dramatically increased the availability of MSC-certified ambient tuna on UK shelves, soaring from 2,461 tonnes in 2020/21 to a projected 37,027 tonnes by 2024/25. The MSC certification ensures careful consideration of fish stocks, marine ecosystems, and fishing communities.
Consumer Trends and Insights
Jeremy Gibson, Marketing Director at Princes, expressed his excitement about the project, stating: “The launch of the Ocean Select range is a direct response to consumers seeking delicious, high-quality food that feels luxurious, but is affordable. There has been a significant shift in home cooking, with shoppers looking for inspiring and sustainable ingredients, while experimenting with flavours and tastes.”
He noted the increasing versatility of tuna, highlighting its presence in a growing variety of meals, including salads, pasta dishes, sandwiches, and jacket potatoes. “This is an exciting step for Princes as we continue to innovate and expand our ambient fish portfolio,” he added.
Availability
The MSC Yellowfin Tuna Steak range will initially be available in Tesco stores nationwide, with plans to offer a 3x80g format by the end of the year.
