Roma Saleyards Market Report: Resilience Amidst Reduced Yarding

This week’s sale at the Roma Saleyards witnessed a significantly reduced yarding of just over 2100 head, attributed to the recent wet weather. Nevertheless, the market remained robust, with many regular buyers, including lot feeders and backgrounders, actively participating. The cattle originated from both Queensland and New South Wales, sourced from locations such as Injune, Mitchell, Roma, and Surat, as well as areas further afield including Adavale, Aramac, Charleville, Cunnamulla, Tambo, and Wyandra.
Barbara Plains Grazing Co from Wyandra reported successful sales of Simmental cross steers and heifers. Highlights included a sale of steers at 599c/kg, averaging 287kg for a total return of $1,724 per head. Notably, three pens topped at 608c/kg, with the heaviest pen at 312kg achieving $1,901 per head.
In addition, another pen of Simmental cross steers sold for 542c/kg at 380kg, bringing in $2,060 each. The heifers also performed well, with an average of 442c/kg for 264kg, totaling $1,171. One pen reached 454c/kg, averaging 278kg and selling for $1,264 per head.

Stanyer Partnership, based in Charleville, sold a run of Droughtmaster cross heifers for 428c/kg, weighing 298kg and returning $1,279 per head. Two pens sold for 446c/kg, with one pen weighing 318kg and averaging $1,420.

The recent wet weather impacted the numbers, resulting in a total of 2124 penned, including consignments from New South Wales. The market showed strength across all descriptions, with yearling steers up to 330kg topping at 608c/kg. Steers in the larger range also saw competitive bidding, with values for yearlings regularly exceeding expectations.

A total of 2124 cattle were consigned at Roma’s Store Sale on Tuesday:
- Weaner steers under 200kg: topped at 608c/kg, averaging 545c/kg.
- 200-280kg range: reached 608c/kg, averaging 541c/kg.
- 280-330kg range: reached a peak of 608c/kg, averaging 522c/kg.
- 330-400kg range: culminated at 566c/kg, averaging 482c/kg.
- Feeder steers 400-500kg: peaked at 500c/kg, averaging 472c/kg.
Noteworthy sales included:
- Barbara Plains Grazing Co: Simmental cross steers to 608c/kg, topping $2,060, averaging $1,724.
- DJ & JF Goodman: Angus cross steers to 608c/kg, topping $1,372, averaging $1,257.
- Todd Grazing Enterprises: Simmental cross steers to 604c/kg, reaching $1,873 on average.
- Brenda Station: Angus cross steers peaked at 576c/kg, averaging $1,686.
Cows & Heifers Performance
Cows in the 330-400kg range reached 378c/kg, while over 600kg cows reached a top of 405c/kg. Heifers under 200kg saw a peak of 456c/kg, leading to strong average prices across all categories.
