UK Salmon Sales Surge to £1.5 Billion Amid Increasing Demand
Salmon has solidified its status as the UK’s favorite fish, with recent statistics showing sales have surged to an impressive £1.5 billion, driven by a significant rise in consumer demand.
Remarkable Growth in Sales
Over the past year, sales of salmon climbed by 7.2% in the 12 months leading up to August, accounting for nearly a third of all fish sales in the UK. In comparison, the overall fish category only saw a year-on-year growth of 3.7%, indicating that salmon is outpacing its seafood competitors.
A Leader in the Seafood Sector
Salmon remains the dominant player in the seafood market, holding a substantial 32% value share and selling almost three times the quantity of cod, its nearest rival. The fish also outperforms tuna and prawns, highlighting its enduring popularity among consumers both at grocery stores and during home meals.
Boost in Exports and Exporting Success
Trade organization Salmon Scotland has attributed these impressive figures to strong consumer confidence and the rising demand for Scottish salmon, particularly those sourced from the scenic waters of the Highlands and islands. Additionally, Scottish salmon continues to be the UK’s largest food export, with international sales set to exceed the £1 billion mark for the first time. During the last year, salmon exports from Scotland soared by 33% amounting to £941 million.
Nutritional Benefits of Salmon
Health experts recommend that adults and children consume two portions of fish each week, with one serving ideally being oily fish like Scottish farmed salmon. Notably, a single portion of this fish can provide over 70% of the daily vitamin D requirements, which is especially beneficial during the time of year when natural sunlight is scarce in Scotland.
Industry Insights
Tavish Scott, Chief Executive of Salmon Scotland, commented on the ongoing trend:
“The popularity of Scottish salmon keeps growing, both here and abroad. With salmon now accounting for nearly a third of all fish sales in the UK, it’s clear that more people are choosing it for its health benefits and sustainability. Shoppers continue to trust its quality, with Scottish salmon renowned for its superior taste and responsible farming practices. This consumer demand is great news for the nation’s health and the economy, supporting thousands of jobs across Scotland’s rural and coastal communities.”
