Scottish Salmon Sector Thrives Amid Economic Growth
Salmon Scotland responds to the latest marine economic statistics released by the Scottish Government, highlighting a remarkable increase in the fish farming sector’s economic contribution.
According to the newly published marine economic statistics for 2023, Scotland’s fish farming industry has witnessed a nearly 30% surge in its direct economic contribution. Notably, Scottish salmon dominates the aquaculture sector, comprising 95% of its total output. The report indicates that the Gross Value Added (GVA) jumped from £361 million in 2022 to £468 million in 2023.
Long-term Growth and Employment
Over the past decade, aquaculture has shown considerable resilience, with GVA increasing by 37% from 2014 to 2023. Employment within the sector has also grown, showing a modest increase of 3%. The productivity rates are impressive, with aquaculture generating more than £212,545 in GVA per employee.
Overall, Scotland’s marine economy amounted to £5.6 billion in 2023. The sector is predominantly driven by oil and gas contributions, valued at £2.4 billion, followed by marine tourism at £699 million, and shipbuilding at £540 million. Interestingly, aquaculture’s contribution of £468 million surpasses that of traditional fishing, which accounts for £394 million.
The Broader Impact of the Salmon Sector
It is important to note that the economic figures for the salmon sector do not encompass the broader supply chain, which significantly adds to the economy. Currently, there are approximately 2,500 direct jobs in Scottish salmon, coupled with around 11,000 indirect jobs.
A recent independent economic report from BiGGAR Economics indicates that the Scottish salmon sector contributes a staggering £1 billion annually to the economy. As of 2024, the GVA for Scottish salmon is projected to be £231.2 million, with an additional £589.9 million generated through its supply chain.
Statements from Industry Leaders
Tavish Scott, Chief Executive of Salmon Scotland, commented on the report:
“These figures confirm that Scottish salmon continues to generate vital wealth for the country, and especially for our Highland and islands communities. However, they only tell part of our economic success story, given that the sector also supports a nationwide supply chain and is attracting record exports and rising consumer demand.
The aquaculture sector is the fourth biggest in the entire marine economy, creating thousands of well-paid jobs and opportunities. Everyone in the sector is part of a global success story built on high environmental and welfare standards, producing one of the healthiest and best-tasting foods in the world.”
