Swimming Lessons Secured for Local Pupils by Bakkafrost Scotland
A rural school in Argyll and Bute is set to provide essential swimming lessons for its students, thanks to generous support from Bakkafrost Scotland’s Community Fund.
Strachur Primary School, located approximately 20 miles from the nearest swimming facility in Dunoon, faced significant transport challenges that threatened the future of its swimming program. However, the Strachur Parent Partnership Group (SPPG) has successfully secured funding that ensures uninterrupted swimming instruction for pupils in the upcoming 2025/26 academic year.
This funding will allow pre-school children, as well as students from Primary 1 to Primary 7, to attend swimming lessons at the Dunoon leisure center.
Community Voices: The Importance of Swimming Lessons
Michelle Campbell, Secretary of the SPPG, expressed her gratitude: “The swimming lessons are an excellent experience. The biggest challenge for us has always been the transportation costs associated with getting the children to the pool and back. While we are fortunate to live in such a beautiful area, our distance from vital facilities like the Riverside Leisure Centre poses a real issue. Given our proximity to Loch Fyne and Loch Eck, it is crucial that our children learn to swim.”
Commitment from Local Businesses
David Morrison, General Manager of Bakkafrost Scotland in Cairndow, who nominated Strachur Primary for the funding, emphasized the significance of supporting local initiatives: “The school and preschool represent a vital part of the Argyll and Bute community. As a primary employer in the region, we are delighted to extend our support, especially for such an essential life skill as swimming.”
