Food conglomerate Thai Union Group has launched what it said is the seafood industry’s first fully recyclable shelf-stable tuna pouch, developed with packaging firm Mondi.

The mono-material polypropylene pouch is being rolled out under the John West brand as part of its new “Stir & Serve” range, now available in the UK and Ireland at J. Sainsbury, Waitrose & Partners, Asda and Ocado, with wider European expansion planned in 2026.

Unlike conventional multi-layer pouches that combine plastic and aluminum, the new format uses a single recyclable material while maintaining a shelf life of up to 18 months at room temperature. The lightweight design also reduces transport emissions and helps limit food waste.

Marketed as a quick meal solution, the pouches can be mixed with staples such as pasta or rice and provide two servings with up to 46 grams of protein. Four flavors are available, all free from artificial additives.

The launch supports Thai Union’s SeaChange 2030 target of fully sustainable packaging across its branded portfolio, where it had reached 91% progress by the end of 2025. Further rollouts of the technology are planned through 2026 and beyond.
