Redefining Cellular Control: Prolific Machines’ Revolutionary Approach
Rather than controlling cell function by adding expensive growth factors or other molecules to cell culture media in a bioreactor, California-based Prolific Machines exposes cells containing light-sensitive proteins to light at specific wavelengths, a technique known as optogenetics.
This innovative approach can activate or deactivate certain genes, proteins, or cellular pathways, delivering unprecedented cellular control in biomanufacturing, according to CEO Dr. Deniz Kent.
Speaking to AgFunderNews at the recent Future Food-Tech summit in San Francisco, Dr. Kent highlighted the potential of using light as a cost-effective, sterile, and reproducible alternative to traditional methods.
Advantages of Light Over Molecules
Dr. Kent explained that traditional methods involving molecules come with several challenges, including cost, lack of spatial control, sterility issues, and reproducibility problems. In contrast, light is inexpensive, inherently sterile, reproducible, and offers precise spatial and temporal control.
Reducing Downstream Processing Costs
Additionally, utilizing light for cellular control can potentially reduce downstream processing and purification costs post-harvest, as fewer media components are introduced to the bioreactor.
How Prolific Machines’ Technology Works
Prolific Machines genetically attaches light-sensitive proteins to different targets inside cells, allowing for specific and targeted cellular control. This approach enables precise perturbation of cellular biology without affecting the entire system.
Three Key Components
Dr. Kent outlined the three key components of their technology: attaching light-sensitive proteins to cellular targets, integrating plug-and-play illuminators into existing bioreactor infrastructure, and employing an AI algorithm to determine optimal light patterns based on sensor data.
Focus on Therapeutic Proteins and Cultivated Meat
While Prolific Machines initially focused on cultivated meat, they have shifted their attention to therapeutic proteins due to the significant market demand. Dr. Kent emphasized the company’s belief in the inevitability of cultivated meat production and its role in ending animal exploitation.
With a strong focus on therapeutic proteins initially to achieve financial sustainability, Prolific Machines remains committed to advancing technology for cultivated meat production in the future.
