UK Seafood Imports to Korea Surge in H1 2025, Driven by Mackerel and Whelk
In the first half of 2025, South Korea witnessed a dramatic increase in seafood imports from the UK, soaring by 195% year-on-year to reach 3,111 tons. The total import value also experienced a significant rise, up by 123% from the previous year to USD 24.8 million. These gains were primarily fueled by the increased imports of frozen mackerel and whelk.
Mackerel Emerges as the Leading Import Item
In an impressive turnaround, frozen mackerel imports from the UK, which saw no shipments in the first half of 2024, skyrocketed to 1,510 tons in 2025. This amounts to 48.5% of all UK seafood imports, quickly establishing mackerel as the top item. The import value for this fish was noted at USD 4.29 million, with an import unit price of USD 2.84/kg, making it the most economical option among major seafood species. This affordability enhances its appeal for processing and distribution.
Whelk Imports Thrive Despite Price Hikes
The familiar seafood choice for many Koreans, frozen boiled whelk meat, enjoyed an import surge, with volumes reaching 1,456 tons, reflecting a 62% increase from the previous year. The total import value for whelk reached USD 19.91 million, exhibiting a 97% growth. However, the unit price saw a rise of 21.6% to USD 13.68/kg. This trend can be attributed to consistent demand for home consumption and culinary processing, highlighting whelk’s enduring popularity despite increasing prices. Notably, whelk accounted for 80.3% of the total import value, securing its position as the leader by value.
Minor Adjustments in Herring Roe and Boiled Whelk Imports
Frozen herring roe, seen as a substitute for caviar, fetched 85 tons in imports for 2025, marking an 18% year-on-year increase. The associated import value also grew by 28% to reach USD 0.34 million, indicating a steady demand for this product with a stable unit price of USD 4.00/kg.
On the other hand, imports of frozen boiled whelk remained stable at 60 tons, but the unit price fell by 44%, dropping from USD 7.80/kg to USD 4.35/kg. Consequently, the import value for this product decreased to USD 0.26 million.
