This session aims to enhance producers’ understanding of Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD), an exotic ailment that, while not currently present in Australia, demands ongoing vigilance and awareness. The webinar serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of Australia’s collective focus on national preparedness against emerging animal health threats.

Current Situation of Lumpy Skin Disease

Recently, LSD was confirmed in Bali, Indonesia, which is in close proximity to Australia. The disease, spread by airborne insects, has traveled from Africa through the Middle East and Europe, reaching Asia in just over a decade. With its eastern spread continuing, the recent case in Bali places LSD within approximately 1,200 km of the Australian mainland.

The Australian Government and industry representatives are intently monitoring the situation, especially following the disease’s initial detection in Indonesia in 2022.

The webinar is scheduled for Wednesday, February 25th, at Noon AEDST (11 AM Queensland time). It will be presented by Dr. Beth Cookson, Australia’s Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO).

Dr. Cookson is an esteemed expert in animal health surveillance and biosecurity, with over 20 years of experience in the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry. As the primary advisor on Australia’s animal health status, she plays a critical role in national biosecurity efforts.
