Kreider Farms Honored with Environmental Excellence Award

Kreider Farms, located in Manheim, Pennsylvania, has gained national recognition by being one of just five farms across the United States to receive the prestigious Family Farm Environmental Excellence Award from the U.S. Poultry & Egg Association (USPOULTRY). This accolade was awarded during the 2026 International Production & Processing Expo held in Atlanta, an event dedicated to celebrating outstanding environmental practices in the poultry and egg industry.

The Family Farm Environmental Excellence Award acknowledges family farms that demonstrate exceptional stewardship of the environment. The evaluation process assessed various criteria, including nutrient management planning, innovative sustainability approaches, community involvement, and advanced litter or manure management techniques. A panel of environmental experts from universities and regulatory agencies conducted thorough reviews of applications and visited each farm.

Innovative Practices at Kreider Farms

Kreider Farms stands out as a model of sustainable egg production integrated within a broad agricultural operation. The farm operates six layer facilities across three counties and employs a belt-system litter management process, which removes manure every two days to minimize buildup. Apart from egg production, Kreider Farms manages a dairy operation with an 1,800-head milking herd and cultivates over 3,000 acres of crops.

Nutrient Management and Soil Health

The foundation of Kreider Farms’ environmental stewardship is a comprehensive Nutrient Management Plan that has been in place since 1998. Soil in the farm’s crop fields is tested every three years to ensure optimal health. The incorporation of litter into the soil helps reduce runoff and odors, while no-till farming practices prevent erosion and enhance water retention. These methods not only protect water quality but also foster the recycling of nutrients, ensuring the long-term productivity of the soil.
