The Ecuadorian shrimp industry has formed a new partnership with Conservation International Ecuador to strengthen mangrove conservation and restoration while advancing more sustainable aquaculture practices.
The agreement brings together the country’s national chamber of aquaculture, or the CNA, the Sustainable Shrimp Partnership and Conservation International Ecuador under the Mangroves for Climate initiative to coordinate joint actions on ecosystem protection and climate resilience.
The partnership aims to restore 250 hectares of mangroves by 2030 and reduce an estimated 112,870 metric tons of CO2 emissions. It also seeks to expand certified sustainable shrimp production across 20,000ha of farms.
“The framework will support conservation and sustainable management of mangrove ecosystems, which are key for climate mitigation, biodiversity, and coastal livelihoods,” Conservation International Ecuador said.
The initiative builds on Ecuador’s 2022 commitment to avoid ecosystem conversion for aquaculture expansion and continues ongoing restoration pilots and monitoring efforts along the coast.
