Breakthrough Study Reveals Benefits of Betaine in Poultry Nutrition

Recent research has illustrated that betaine-based feed additives significantly enhance poultry growth rates, even in scenarios where feed availability is constrained.

According to researchers from Saint Petersburg State University of Medicine and Microbiology in Russia, the addition of betaine to chicken feed resulted in a 5.6% increase in live weight, a 5.7% boost in average daily weight gain, and a 5.7% improvement in feed conversion efficiency, despite a reduction in daily feed intake.

Experimental Insights

During a 38-day experiment, the scientists divided 40 grandparent chicks into two distinct groups. The control group was maintained on a standard diet while the experimental group received feed with betaine alongside a slight decrease in feed availability.

“The findings concerning the effects of restricted feed intake were quite intriguing,” noted Alexander Lunegov, a senior researcher. “The restricted feed consumption enhanced poultry metabolism, preventing excessive fat accumulation and promoting uniform growth of skeletal and muscular tissues relative to internal organs.”

Enhanced Immune Response

One unexpected yet promising outcome of the study was the noticeable improvement in the immune response among the experimental group. Researchers recorded a significant 15.3% increase in the bactericidal activity of blood granulocytes.

“Granulocytes contribute to the bird’s immune defense by disrupting microbial cell membranes. The heightened activity signifies an enhancement in the bird’s protective mechanisms,” explained Georgy Ilyin, a co-author of the study.

Implications for Offspring Performance

Looking ahead, scientists are optimistic that the observed improvements in both productivity and physiological parameters in parent and grandparent flocks could lead to enhanced performance in their offspring, although this hypothesis requires further investigation.

Future Directions in Feed Strategy Development

Research teams are now focused on developing innovative strategies to improve feed conversion ratios based on the insights gained from this study.

“The practical implications of this research are significant for the poultry industry, particularly within the context of increasing production profitability while mitigating feed costs,” the researchers concluded.
