Ace Aquatec Makes Waves with First African Installation in Landmark Export Achievement
Ace Aquatec, a leader in humane aquaculture technology, has marked a significant milestone by securing its inaugural installation in Africa. This development sees Sanlei Premium Trout, located in Lesotho, adopting Ace Aquatec’s advanced humane stunning system, setting a new standard in fish welfare across the continent.
Transformative Technology for the Aquaculture Sector
The installation involves the state-of-the-art in-water Humane Stunner Universal (A-HSU®), a groundbreaking solution capable of rendering fish unconscious in just one second. This innovation will enable Sanlei to process between 10 and 15 tonnes of fish per hour humanely. Such capabilities enhance welfare compliance, streamline operations, and guarantee consistent quality in the products offered.
Enhancing Operational Efficiency and Fish Welfare
In a region where traditional brailing methods are still prevalent, the A-HSU® offers substantial improvements. By integrating this system, Sanlei will significantly reduce its fish handling, thus improving operational efficiency among its 110 employees. Moreover, minimizing stress in fish not only boosts the quality of the final product but also aligns with contemporary expectations for ethical production.
Meeting Rising Consumer Demands
As demand for fish from certified farms is projected to increase — especially with retail giants like Walmart entering the South African market — Sanlei is poised to maintain its competitive edge. As the only Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) certified producer in the region, this installation places Sanlei in a prime position to meet the growing consumer expectations.
Voices Behind the Collaboration
Dewald Fourie, CEO of Sanlei Premium Trout, shared his enthusiasm for the partnership: “Working with Ace Aquatec has been an overwhelmingly positive experience. Their flexibility and attention to detail regarding our specific operating conditions and need to accommodate hand netting have ensured that the design of this game-changing technology has been as smooth as possible. The system being installed will support our growth and strengthen our ambitions to further enhance our welfare and certification standards. We are already considering the system for a second site.”
Nathan Pyne-Carter, CEO of Ace Aquatec, remarked: “Southern Africa’s aquaculture industry is undergoing rapid growth, and Ace Aquatec is uniquely equipped to support producers with the high-welfare technologies that global markets now expect. Our collaboration with Sanlei, developing a tailored solution that boosts both welfare standards and processing performance, showcases innovation at its best.”
