Agriculture Engagement Can Turn Regulation Into Market Opportunity –

LUBBOCK, TX – Farmers risk having production standards and food-system rules shaped without them if agriculture is not involved when retailers, regulators and outside groups set expectations for the supply chain.

Texas Tech University agricultural economist Darren Hudson says agriculture increasingly faces demands involving sustainability, environmental practices, food production and other standards that can affect producer competitiveness.

Hudson says those pressures can become opportunities when producers, researchers and agricultural organizations participate early in the discussion. Scientific information can help distinguish achievable improvements from requirements that may increase costs without delivering meaningful benefits.

He points to cotton sustainability efforts as an example. Industry engagement with major retailers helped develop voluntary programs that allowed producers to meet specific standards and potentially earn premiums rather than simply face top-down requirements.

Hudson says agriculture needs sound science and strong representation at the table as food companies, consumers and policymakers increasingly influence how agricultural products move through the supply chain.

Farm-Level Takeaway: Producer involvement in food-system decisions can help turn new production requirements into voluntary market opportunities rather than costly mandates.
