Bakkafrost Scotland Introduces New Parking Option for Scalpay Walkers
Leading salmon producer Bakkafrost Scotland has taken a significant step in enhancing the visitor experience on the island of Scalpay by funding a new car park. This initiative comes in response to a notable surge in visitor numbers.
Increased Visitor Demand
The Scalpay Heritage Trail has seen an impressive 18% rise in visitors compared to the previous year, primarily driven by the island’s iconic red and white lighthouse, which has become a popular attraction for walkers. However, the challenge of limited parking, especially given the island’s single-track roads, has prompted the need for additional facilities.
Community Collaboration
In partnership with the North Harris Trust, which is responsible for managing much of the local land, a suitable parking area was identified just under a mile from Bakkafrost Scotland’s shorebase at Cuddy Point. The local employer generously contributed to the construction and signage of the new car park, which can accommodate up to seven vehicles.
Perspectives from Local Leaders
Michael Hunter, Manager of the North Harris Trust, expressed his enthusiasm about the new facility:
“The growing popularity of Scalpay as a visitor destination, largely driven by the heritage trail, is excellent news for the island. The scenic walk and the lighthouse are significant attractions. However, the rise in visitor numbers has underscored the need for enhanced parking facilities. We want to minimize disruption for residents, so this new public parking area is very much welcomed.”
“The car park connects directly to the Scalpay Heritage Trail while also providing access to a picturesque circular walk around Loch an Dùin,” he added.
“Bakkafrost Scotland stands as one of the island’s two largest employers, and we deeply appreciate their contribution to this project.”
Commitment to Community Support
Hamish Maclean, Area Manager at Bakkafrost Scotland, also shared his thoughts on the initiative:
“Supporting community-driven projects like this is essential for us, as they benefit everyone living and working on Scalpay. The Heritage Trail allows more people to experience the island’s stunning natural surroundings, crucial for our salmon production. Additionally, improved parking ensures visitors can explore responsibly without disrupting the local community.”
Looking Ahead
With the newly established parking facility now in place, Scalpay is better positioned to accommodate the influx of visitors during the summer season, promoting both tourism and local community interests.
