Transforming Nutritional Health in Sri Lanka: Beyond the Shell 2025
A recent initiative funded by the Poultry Science Association’s Hatchery Brooder Program has successfully addressed nutritional challenges in Sri Lanka. The community outreach event, titled Beyond the Shell 2025, took place on November 14–15 in the Nuwara Eliya estate sector, with a focus on promoting eggs as an affordable and nutritious dietary option for vulnerable populations, including school children and pregnant women.
Evidence-Based Nutrition, Delivered Locally
Organized by a dedicated team from the University of Peradeniya and the University of Ruhuna, this two-day event provided science-based nutritional knowledge to local families. A primary aim of the initiative was to debunk prevalent myths surrounding egg consumption and to clarify the numerous health benefits of incorporating eggs into daily diets.
The program was spearheaded by Prof. Janak Vidanarachchi from the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Peradeniya, assisted by Ashen Epa Arachchi, a student leader and committee member of the PSA Student Hatchery. They worked closely with Dr. Hasitha Priyashantha and Dr. Shishanthi Jayaratne from the University of Ruhuna, who offered crucial technical support and expertise.
PSA Student Hatchery Brooder Program: Making an Impact
The Poultry Science Association proudly sponsored this project through its Student Hatchery Brooder Program, designed to support student-led initiatives that enhance public health awareness and poultry science outreach. Additional backing came from the Sri Lanka Association of Animal Production and other key partners.
Student Leadership and Lasting Impact
The success of Beyond the Shell 2025 was significantly bolstered by the enthusiasm of students from the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Peradeniya, alongside the IAAS Association. Their leadership was pivotal in engaging the local community. The event not only provided families with essential health information but also afforded students invaluable hands-on experience in organizing and communicating scientific knowledge, thus fostering critical soft skills necessary for future professionals.
Looking Beyond the Shell
Beyond the Shell 2025 transcends typical outreach; it is a strategic effort to combat malnutrition in Sri Lanka’s estate sector. The program emphasizes the crucial role of eggs in enhancing food security and improving health outcomes through affordable, protein-rich nourishment. The Poultry Science Association is proud to champion the next generation of scientists and advocates dedicated to bringing scientific insight to communities—one egg at a time.
