Historic Funding for Wild Atlantic Salmon Conservation in Canada
Programs dedicated to the conservation and restoration of wild Atlantic salmon populations in Canada are receiving a significant boost with the largest-ever federal government funding commitment.
Major Investment in Atlantic Salmon
The Canadian federal government has allocated CAD 81.7 million (approximately $60.3 million) over five years as part of a national strategy aimed at ensuring the future of the Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). This crucial investment was announced by the Atlantic Salmon Federation (ASF) in a press release dated April 2.
Public-Private Partnership
In addition to the federal funding, the ASF will contribute a matching CAD 25 million, raised from individuals and various organizations. Nathan Wilbur, president of the ASF, characterized this initiative as a pioneering public-private partnership, marking the largest investment in Atlantic salmon history.
“This represents a major public-private commitment to one of Canada’s most iconic species,” said Wilbur, acknowledging the ASF’s longstanding role in the conservation and protection of North America’s wild Atlantic salmon.
Force of Nature Plan
The funding for this salmon strategy comes from Canada’s CAD 3.8 billion Force of Nature plan, launched last year to enhance nature conservation, establish protected areas, and support funding for various environmental projects that had previously received federal support.
Goals and Conservation Efforts
The ASF, which receives partial funding from recreational fishing interests, aligns with several goals outlined in the Force of Nature initiative. Notably, the organization supports Canada’s commitment to conserving 30% of its land and water by 2030, as emphasized by Wilbur in the release.
Current Status of Wild Atlantic Salmon Populations
Currently, wild Atlantic salmon populations in North America are estimated to be around 400,000 returning adults annually. The long-term objective of the ASF is to rebuild those populations to a stable one million fish, according to Wilbur.
