Singapore-based cultivated seafood company UMAMI Bioworks has recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Japanese trading and distribution firm Nippon Barrier Free. This partnership marks a significant step toward commercializing marine-derived cultivated ingredients in Japan and other international markets.

According to the MoU, Nippon Barrier Free will leverage its extensive sales and distribution network across Japan and several overseas markets to promote the sale and distribution of UMAMI Bioworks’ cell-based marine ingredients. These include collagen and various functional compounds that can be utilized in sectors such as cosmetics, nutraceuticals, and wellness applications.

This new agreement comes on the heels of a joint development partnership that UMAMI Bioworks established with Maruha Nichiro Corp., which is recognized as the world’s largest seafood company by revenue.
