In a remarkable effort to support those in need, more than 1,600 head of cattle have embarked on a challenging journey, covering over 500 kilometers as part of the Great Australian Charity Cattle Drive. This initiative aims to raise funds to help feed homeless and disadvantaged Australians.
The drive began in Longreach in May and has taken the cattle along the stock routes of Western Queensland, all for the benefit of BeefBank, a charity dedicated to providing meat to FareShare.
Currently near Morven, the herd will continue its trek, with the final 275 kilometers set to reach Roma in the first week of August.
To encourage public participation, individuals have the opportunity to purchase a saddle, adopt a steer, or make direct donations to BeefBank.
Engaging the Next Generation
Adding an educational component to this charitable effort, ten students from Mitchell State School will join the drive. They will experience life as drovers through a two-night camping adventure.
“Students from Year 7 to 10 had to apply and explain what they would gain from this experience, from which we selected ten participants,” shared Jeremy Heslop, Ag Science Teacher at Mitchell State School.
“Our group is diverse, including students with varying levels of experience with cattle and mustering. I believe it is essential for students to understand the beef industry and gain hands-on experiences that push them outside their comfort zones. All the students are very excited and looking forward to this adventure.”
Mr. Heslop and the students will join the herd on July 28 for two nights of camping, trekking approximately 10 kilometers a day into Mitchell.
Win a Trip of a Lifetime
In addition to supporting the cattle drive, you have the chance to win an incredible prize! By purchasing tickets for the major raffle, you can enter to win an exclusive trip valued at over $100,000. The drawing will take place at the end of the drive on Wednesday, August 6.
The lucky winner will enjoy the use of a Pilatus PC-12 private plane, accompanied by a pilot, for four days exploring Queensland with five friends. The adventure will include attending the Birdsville Races, fishing in the Gulf, and staying at iconic sheep and cattle stations. Tickets are priced at $100 each or $1,000 for 15 tickets.
