In a significant move for the poultry sector in Saudi Arabia, McDonald’s has established a strategic partnership with the Saudi Development Authority and Al Tanmiah Food Company. This collaboration aims to enhance the quality of local poultry production and drive advancements within the industry.
The partnership will focus on expanding the production of large broilers in Saudi Arabia. With Tanmiah being the only poultry company in the region capable of producing large broilers, it is well-positioned to meet the growing demand. This was emphasized in a press release issued by the company on July 24.
Through this agreement, Tanmiah is set to increase its poultry supply to McDonald’s, which boasts around 412 restaurants across Saudi Arabia, making it one of the leading fast-food chains in the country.
Size Matters
The production of large broilers poses a well-documented challenge due to the harsh climate and challenging agricultural conditions in Saudi Arabia. Typically, Saudi poultry farmers focus on smaller broilers, averaging around 1.4 kg in live weight and 1 kg in carcass weight. The growth cycle for these birds usually spans between 28 to 35 days, with average daily weight gains of 48-54 grams.
Historically, several factors have influenced Saudi farmers to prefer smaller birds. Smaller broilers occupy less space, allowing for a higher stocking density, thus maximising production capabilities. Additionally, the consumer preference within Saudi Arabia leans towards smaller birds, further solidifying this trend.
To scale up large broiler production, Tanmiah will leverage its expertise in poultry farming, animal nutrition, and health, ensuring high standards and optimal growth conditions.
Additional Capacities
This partnership aligns with Saudi Vision 2030, an ambitious development program aimed at fostering self-sufficiency in food production, among other goals.
“Our collaboration with Tanmiah epitomizes our mutual objective to localize poultry production in line with the aspirations of Saudi Vision 2030. We remain committed to maintaining the highest quality, safety, and sustainability standards throughout our supply chain,” stated Prince Majed Fahad Al Saud, Assistant CEO of McDonald’s Saudi Arabia.
In anticipation of the growth prospects from this partnership, Tanmiah is currently crafting new expansion plans to enhance poultry production capabilities across the kingdom.
