Honouring Excellence: The Norway-UK Seafood Partnership
Spotlight on Fish Focus: Discover the latest publication highlighting Norway’s commitment to quality seafood.
A Lasting Alliance
The partnership between Norway and the UK in the seafood industry is rooted in decades of fruitful collaboration and a shared respect for marine ecosystems. United by principles of sustainability and a commitment to quality, these two nations have cultivated a robust alliance that supports the UK’s most cherished culinary staple: fish and chips.
The Backbone of Fish and Chips
At the core of this beneficial relationship is Norway’s role as a premier supplier of responsibly sourced cod and haddock—two types of premium whitefish that adhere to the industry’s highest standards for quality and sustainability. For generations, this seafood has been integral to the UK’s fish and chip sector, providing friers across the nation with consistent quality, exceptional flavour, and traceability.
Supporting the Industry
Norway’s commitment to the fish and chip industry extends well beyond mere supply. For over ten years, Seafood from Norway has collaborated with the National Fish & Chip Awards (NF&CA), celebrating excellence across the sector. Since the awards’ reorganisation in 2022 under the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF), Seafood from Norway has worked diligently to support the people and enterprises that make this traditional dish iconic.
A Celebration of Achievement
In 2025, Seafood from Norway not only sponsored the NF&CA but also supported the Environment and Sustainable Business Award, reflecting its ongoing dedication to responsible practices throughout the supply chain. Earlier that year, the organisation hosted winners of the NF&CA for an Inspiration Day, filled with enriching discussions and celebratory events, including a hands-on cooking session with Master Fishmonger Carol ‘CJ’ Jackson using Norwegian saithe, culminating in a gracious reception at the residence of the Norwegian Ambassador, H.E. Tore Hattrem.
National Fish & Chip Day and Future Innovations
In June, the UK marked the 10th anniversary of National Fish & Chip Day (NF&CD)—an event dedicated to honouring the individuals, businesses, and traditions behind this beloved dish. Seafood from Norway proudly joined in the celebrations, showcasing its unwavering support for the industry.
Looking forward, the 2026 National Fish & Chip Awards have introduced a revamped application process with exciting new categories, such as the Menu Innovation Award. Seafood from Norway remains committed to nurturing the next wave of talent within the industry and celebrating those who keep this cherished dish alive.
Voices from the Industry
Victoria Braathen, UK Director of the Norwegian Seafood Council, encapsulated this extraordinary partnership by stating:
“The Norwegian seafood industry has worked closely with the fish and chip industry in the UK for many years, supplying responsibly sourced cod and haddock of the highest quality. This year has seen many enriching opportunities for us to celebrate our longstanding relationship with distributors and the many talented, dedicated fish and chip operators across the UK. We’re incredibly honoured to be a part of it.”
