Queensland’s Push to Develop the Taroom Trough: A New Era for Domestic Oil Supply

Queensland is making strides towards unlocking the Taroom Trough as a significant source of domestic oil. The state government is actively seeking federal support to expedite the necessary approvals, aiming to reduce reliance on global fuel supply chains.

The Queensland Government asserts that developing the first oil field in half a century will enhance the nation’s long-term fuel security. A new initiative, the Taroom Trough Development Plan, is set to streamline support for this vital project.

Current Developments in the Taroom Trough

The initial batches of oil from the Taroom Trough are already entering the domestic fuel market. Shell is currently producing 200 barrels of high-quality crude oil daily, which is being processed at iOR’s Eromanga refinery and converted into diesel.

Under the new Taroom Trough Development Plan, the Crisafulli Government has committed to improving roads and trunk infrastructure. This plan will create a comprehensive framework to expedite responsible oil and gas resource development within the region.

Federal Government Support Requested

To advance the development, the Crisafulli Government is urging the Federal Government to classify the Taroom Trough as a project of national interest. This designation would allow for expedited assessments under the National Interest Fast-Track Assessment Pathway, a mechanism already established for other major undertakings.

This pathway aims to eliminate duplicated approvals already addressed at the state level, enabling quicker production of oil without unnecessary delays.
