Prioritizing Inclusion in Agriculture
Late in 2024, ag recruitment and HR service provider Rimfire teamed up with Ability Agriculture to promote greater employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities within the agricultural sector.
As the agricultural sector grapples with numerous challenges, integrating individuals with disabilities into the workforce remains a priority. While progress has been made, more steps are necessary to foster inclusive hiring practices.
Supported Employment plays a pivotal role in ensuring workplace inclusion, providing career pathways for people with disabilities. Rimfire recently conducted an industry-wide survey to gauge the current landscape surrounding Supported Employment and Open Employment opportunities in agribusiness.
Survey Insights
The survey garnered 70 responses from various stakeholders in the agricultural sector, with over 38% of respondents representing primary production and horticulture sectors. Private unlisted firms constituted about 70% of responses, while non-profit organizations accounted for 15.7%.
Key Findings
Disability Representation in Agriculture
A significant finding revealed the underrepresentation of employees with disabilities in the agriculture sector. While nearly one-third of businesses reported that 1-5% of their workforce identified as having a disability, a staggering 61.4% indicated that none of their employees fell into this category.
Notably, technical roles showed a higher representation (10%) of employees with disabilities, contrasting sharply with sales and management roles, which reported none. This highlights the necessity for inclusive hiring practices throughout all tiers of agribusiness.
Steps Toward Inclusion
Despite existing challenges, 52% of businesses reported having made workplace accommodations for employees with disabilities—indicating proactive steps toward inclusivity. However, a broader awareness and enhanced resources are essential for wider implementation across the industry.
Barriers to Hiring Individuals with Disabilities
Though advancements are visible, half of the survey respondents indicated that they face challenges in hiring people with disabilities. Addressing these hurdles requires collaborative efforts within the industry, educational initiatives on inclusive employment, and ongoing investments in workplace accessibility.
