Reservoir Farms: A New Frontier in Agricultural Technology
Danny Bernstein has realized his vision of building a hub for agricultural technology with the grand opening of Reservoir Farms in Salinas, California. This significant milestone is just the beginning, as the agtech incubator plans to expand its model to Yuma, Arizona, eastern Washington, and various locations throughout California.
The grand opening ceremony, held on March 16, followed a soft launch of the Salinas location last year. This event was part of the first Innovation in Action tour of the World Agri-Tech Innovation Summit, which also included a visit to Tanimura & Antle headquarters, located a short distance away from Reservoir Farms.
Occupying a 40-acre farm at the intersection of Highway 68 and Hitchcock Road, Reservoir Farms is home to a variety of start-ups. These include Agtom, BHF, Cropr, Farmblox, High Degree Ag Machinery, Lumo, TRIC Robotics, Bonsai, Neuralzone Cybernetics, and Numanac.
At Reservoir Farms, start-ups are encouraged to collaborate to tackle market challenges. Bernstein, the CEO and founder, emphasizes the importance of collective innovation. Adam Stager, founder of TRIC Robotics, echoed this sentiment, stating, “We’re all learning how to effectively deploy technologies in agriculture. Through our shared experiences, we can accelerate our market entry collaborative efforts.”
Stager elaborated on the importance of collaboration: “As engineers, we often lack the real-world experience needed for deployment. Working with farmers and strategists enables us to refine our approach and deploy our technologies correctly.” This collaborative environment positions Reservoir Farms as a significant player in the agtech landscape.
In addition to developing go-to-market strategies, start-ups at Reservoir Farms will also need to unite to face prevalent funding challenges. Bernstein noted that agtech start-ups are struggling to attract investment as venture capitalists have become more risk-averse, often favoring later-stage companies or withdrawing from the sector altogether.
Bernstein anticipates a trend towards “mergers of equals” in the agtech space. He explained, “For example, a California startup could collaborate with an Australian counterpart with similar market goals. Pooling their resources can result in more viable strategies. Early relationship building among start-ups can ease the complexity of strategic decisions.”
