Resurrect Bio brings plant immunity back to life with AI‑driven gene editing

Resurrect Bio: Revolutionizing Crop Protection with AI-Driven Solutions

Resurrect Bio, a groundbreaking ag-biotech company based in Norwich, is pioneering a new approach to crop protection by developing disease-resistant plants. Spin-off from The Sainsbury Laboratory, this innovative firm focuses on “resurrecting” native immune genes in plants that have been silenced over time by various pathogens. By leveraging advanced gene editing techniques combined with their proprietary AI platform, FloraFold®, Resurrect Bio provides a sustainable alternative to conventional chemical crop protection methods, enabling crops to naturally defend themselves.

Funding and Growth Strategy

Founded by the esteemed Professors Sophien Kamoun and Tolga Bozkurt, along with CEO Dr. Cian Duggan, Resurrect Bio recently completed the initial phase of an $8.1 million Series A funding round. This investment was led by Corteva’s Catalyst platform alongside other notable investors, including Calculus Capital, Pymwymic, UKI2S, SynBioVen, and AgFunder. The objective of this funding is to significantly scale the company’s high-throughput discovery engine and to expedite the path toward commercial licensing of multiple crop traits.

FloraFold®: A Specialized Platform for Plant Immunity

Central to Resurrect Bio’s competitive advantage is FloraFold®, an AI platform designed specifically for predicting plant-pathogen interactions. According to Dr. Duggan, “Off-the-shelf models like AlphaFold are often biased towards human biology. FloraFold® is tailored for plants, which allows us to achieve greater prediction accuracy.”

What sets FloraFold® apart from other AI-driven systems is its robust integration with large-scale wet-lab validation. “Our wet lab is essential,” Duggan explains. “It confirms our predictions and provides vital data for enhancing FloraFold®.” This synergy enables the identification of suppressed native resistance genes and facilitates their restoration for enhanced plant immunity.

Focus on Major Crops and Diseases

While specific targets remain confidential, Duggan shared that Resurrect Bio is developing solutions for six major crops: soybean, corn, wheat, potato, tomato, and spinach, with future expansions planned to include cotton and canola. The focus is on interactions between plants and conserved plant pathogens, allowing for widespread applicability across various seed companies.

Duggan is optimistic about developing “non-breakable” resistance traits projected to provide protection for five years or longer, adapting to the inevitable evolution of pathogens and pests. “It’s a co-evolutionary arms race,” he noted, emphasizing that the objective is to keep crops one step ahead.

Accelerated Trait Development Timeline

Resurrect Bio claims that it can develop new resistance traits in just one to two years, a staggering reduction from the decade-long timeline usually required for traditional breeding methods. The additional capital from the Series A round will enable the company to enhance AI throughput and biological screening capacity by up to 100 times, expanding their trait pipeline significantly.

An Open Approach to Licensing

Corteva’s investment does not restrict Resurrect Bio’s technology within a singular germplasm. The strategy involves licensing “blueprints” for gene edits, allowing various seed companies to reactivate resistance genes within their specific breeding lines.

The company usually operates on a model of independent trait development followed by licensing; however, it also offers joint development agreements for firms interested in co-funding from the outset. After commercial licensing, seed companies will take the reins on integrating traits, breeding new varieties, conducting assessments, and marketing the seeds.

With this expanded platform and fresh funding, Dr. Duggan is confident that Resurrect Bio is poised to transform the landscape of crop protection. “In two years, we plan to make more gene-editable disease resistance traits than exist today,” he affirmed, marking a significant milestone in agricultural biotechnology.
