UCN adds two tuna categories to its US Customs data tracker, giving users additional insights into species rankings

Undercurrent, the leading seafood intelligence platform and global provider of prices, news and trade data, on Friday (Oct. 2) announced the addition of two new species categories to the US Customs data on its trade portal: tuna and tuna — canned.

The update extends the importer rankings UCN launched in June to one of the most heavily traded species in the US market. Subscribers can now identify the top 25 US importers of tuna, track how those rankings shift month to month and filter the underlying shipment data by category or by individual importer.

The two categories are defined by the product description declared on each customs entry. Tuna — canned covers shipments whose descriptions reference canned product or tuna oil. Tuna covers all other tuna shipments, none of which describe canned product or tuna oil. This split lets users view the canned and pouch business separately from the raw materials and other tuna entering the US.

As the world’s largest tuna importer, bringing in more than 300,000 metric tons of processed tuna each year, the US is a critical market to watch.

Key enhancements:

  • Two tuna categories: Track tuna and tuna — canned separately or together to see how canned imports move relative to the wider tuna trade.
  • Top 25 importer rankings: See, by month and year to date, which US companies are bringing in the largest volumes of tuna. Rankings update as new customs data is released.
  • Importer filtering: Search for a specific US importer to monitor a competitor, customer or supplier’s tuna activity over time.

“Tuna is one of the most requested additions since we launched US Customs importer rankings. It’s a market where a handful of large buyers move enormous volumes, and where tariffs and sourcing shifts are reshaping who buys from where, ” UCN founder Tom Seaman said.

In addition, Undercurrent has changed the methodology for our US customs data. Some records were excluded from the totals shown on our platform, for any shipments not yet cleared, as instructed by our data provider. UCN has restated the affected data, so figures for US Customs from January through July may now differ from what was previously shown.

The new data set is available now within the UCN Trade Portal for subscribers. To access the portal, click here to explore the new functionality, or start your trial here.
