Wagga Yards Report: Steady Market Conditions Amid Mixed Offerings
Current Market Overview
The latest report from Wagga indicates a yarding of 3,325 cattle, representing a slight increase of -140 from the previous week. This week’s offerings have presented a mixed bag, with the majority of cattle in secondary condition and a noticeable scarcity of well-finished specimens aimed at domestic or export processors.
Restocker Demand Drives Prices Up
Despite some feedlot orders being absent, prices for secondary stock maintained strength. The presence of a larger group of restockers in the market has intensified competition, notably increasing the value of lightweight steers and heifers prepared to return to pasture.
Specifically, light steers weighing between 200-280kg experienced a price surge of approximately 35c/kg, averaging $1,228 per head, while lighter-weight heifers saw a gain of 50c/kg, with an average price of $1,021 per head.
Feeder Cattle Market Insights
Trade steers and heifers remained scarce this week, selling in the range of 410–469c/kg. Lightweight feeder steers weighing between 330-400kg, particularly those vendor-bred, attracted robust demand, with prices rising by approximately 20c to an average of 508c/kg. Medium-weight steers also saw keen interest, with prices improving by 4c, ranging from 394–527c/kg.
Feeder heifers also experienced strong demand, particularly for Angus heifers, with lighter weights gaining 5c, selling from 340-470c/kg. Medium-weight feeder heifers remained stable with prices unchanged at 410-494c/kg.
Export Sale Trends
In the export sector, there was a limited availability of heavy steers and bullocks suitable for processors, affecting market trends. The bulk of the heavy cattle sold between 422–455c/kg. Notably, heavy cows were sought after, resulting in an 8c/kg price increase, with heavy cows now ranging from 370-417c/kg.
For leaner cows weighing under 520kg, prices varied from 270–392c/kg, while store cows reached prices as high as 380c/kg.
