Tightening EU rules on biocides are reshaping the way farmers disinfect drinking water systems. With new BPR registrations in place, only fully approved products can be safely and legally used in animal production.
As regulations for the use of biocides tighten globally, the European Union’s approach is undergoing a significant transformation. Previously, biocidal product registrations were managed by individual countries; however, the EU has recently transitioned to a more stringent and unified registration system governed by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) under the Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR). Notably, Intra Hydrocare has emerged as the first product to successfully navigate this rigorous process and gain full approval as a drinking water disinfectant for animals.
A Unique Peroxide Solution
The BPR sets forth stringent safety, toxicological, ecotoxicological, and efficacy standards. This rigorous registration process ensures that only the safest and most effective products are approved. Within the BPR framework, various product types (PT-groups) can obtain registration, including:
- PT02 (private use and public health)
- PT03 (veterinary use)
- PT04 (food and feed)
- PT05 (drinking water for animals)
Practically, a dosage of 50 ppm (50 ml per 1,000 liters of water) is recommended for populated avian housing. However, with its PT05 registration, Intra Hydrocare can be administered at elevated dosages of up to 250 ppm—this is a distinctive feature, as no other BPR-registered hydrogen peroxide product can offer such high dosing thresholds for drinking water, ensuring safe consumption for poultry.
Biofilm accumulation in water systems poses a significant risk during poultry cycles, necessitating routine cleaning and disinfection regardless of housing occupancy. Research indicates that microorganisms proliferate within biofilm structures, undermining animal health. Notably, vaccines, feed supplements, and antibiotics administered through drinking water can become trapped within biofilm, resulting in ineffective dosing and potentially jeopardizing animal well-being.
Only products listed in the EU-BPR database are considered compliant and safe for use. Thus, farmers must vigilantly monitor their disinfectant products to avoid the perilous implications of deploying unregistered biocides.
Maintaining Water System Hygiene
Standard hydrogen peroxide has limitations—it reacts too swiftly with contaminants early in the water system, leaving vulnerable sections exposed, particularly in the later segments of the system where temperatures run higher and water circulation slows.
Intra Hydrocare, an ultra-stabilised pharma-grade hydrogen peroxide, effectively mitigates biofilm development throughout the water system, even with animals present. It is imperative for farmers and integrators to verify compliance with the European Biosafety Act to avert market recalls and ensure the health of their livestock.
