UNFI Launches Sarasota North Distribution Center: A New Era in Operational Efficiency
In a strategic move aimed at enhancing operational effectiveness and delivering greater value to its partners, United Natural Foods Inc. (UNFI) has announced the opening of its Sarasota North Distribution Center in Florida. This 1 million-square-foot facility is a significant upgrade from the previous Sarasota site, providing employees with a more advanced and associate-centered work environment.
Innovation Through Automation
Sarasota North is pioneering the use of KNAPP’s AI-enabled Pick-it-Easy Robot within UNFI’s distribution network. It is also the second facility to implement KNAPP’s Goods-to-Person automation. These cutting-edge technologies are designed to boost order accuracy, enhance efficiency, and improve inventory management, which collectively elevates customer service quality while reducing operating costs.
“By aligning KNAPP’s automation expertise with UNFI’s vision for Sarasota North, we’ve created a solution that not only strengthens operational performance but also empowers warehouse teams and makes a real difference for customers,” said Jusuf Buzimkic, Chief Sales Officer at KNAPP.
“This new distribution center was the perfect opportunity to introduce our AI-enabled Pick-it-Easy Robot into UNFI’s network, further enhancing accuracy, efficiency, and reliability.”
Employee-Centric Features
The Sarasota North facility, which employs over 400 individuals, comes equipped with a variety of features designed to enhance the employee experience:
- Streamlined Operations: Advanced automated repack systems that reduce manual tasks and support greater accuracy.
- Amenities for Associates: Facilities include a gym, game areas, upscale break rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows, and a driver’s lounge.
- Career Growth Opportunities: The center offers expanded skill development and pathways for long-term career advancement.
- Community Commitment: UNFI remains dedicated to community building through associate-led volunteer efforts and partnerships with local organizations, including All Faiths Food Bank Pantry and Mothers Helping Mothers.
“Opening Sarasota North is a significant investment as we continue to optimize our distribution network for the future,” said Jeff Sault, President of Distribution at UNFI. “By combining advanced automation with a strong focus on the associate experience, we’re not only improving how we serve customers and suppliers – we’re creating a better workplace and a stronger foundation for long-term growth.”
Expanding the UNFI Network
The opening of Sarasota North is part of a broader initiative that includes similar investments in other locations such as Carlisle, Pennsylvania; Centralia, Washington; and Manchester, Pennsylvania. These investments collectively aim to innovate and enhance UNFI’s distribution network.
