Ahold Delhaize USA Breaks Ground on $860 Million Distribution Center in North Carolina
Ahold Delhaize USA recently commenced construction on a new distribution center in Burlington, North Carolina, marking a substantial $860 million investment aimed at expanding its supply chain capabilities. This state-of-the-art facility will be the largest within the company’s network, enhancing distribution capabilities for Food Lion and other prominent grocery brands.
Investment and Job Creation
With over one million square feet dedicated to fresh and frozen distribution, the new center is poised to create more than 500 jobs in the local community. Operations are set to begin by 2029, promising to bolster the region’s economy.
“This groundbreaking marks another exciting step forward in strengthening our supply chain network and ensuring we can serve our customers with the freshest products every day,” stated JJ Fleeman, CEO of Ahold Delhaize USA.
He emphasized the company’s commitment to its home state, saying, “We’re proud to invest in North Carolina – one of our home states for nearly 70 years – and to continue building on our commitment to serving local customers and communities by providing access to nutritious and affordable options.”
Facility Innovations
The Burlington facility will feature cutting-edge automation and sustainability elements designed to improve operational efficiency while minimizing environmental impact. The Tippmann Group, experts in constructing temperature-controlled food and cold storage facilities, will oversee the construction, and Witron will provide the necessary automated technology and integrated logistics solutions.
“We are focused on delivering best-in-class service to the grocery brands we support,” noted Sanja Krajnovic, Chief Supply Chain Officer and EVP of ADUSA Distribution and ADUSA Transportation. “The Burlington distribution center will help us expand our capacity, implement new technology, and deploy automation capabilities as we modernize our supply chain.”
Community Involvement and Support
The groundbreaking ceremony saw participation from local and state officials, highlighting the significance of this investment. North Carolina Governor Josh Stein remarked, “This underscores North Carolina’s leadership in attracting transformative investments that create good-paying jobs, strengthen supply chains, and support long-term economic growth.”
Guilford County Board of Commissioners Chairman Melvin “Skip” Alston expressed optimism about the future, stating, “This investment reflects our belief that when we plan boldly and partner intentionally, we create opportunities not just for today’s workforce but for future generations.”
Expanding the Network
The Burlington site will become the fourth distribution center operated by Ahold Delhaize USA in North Carolina, joining existing facilities in Butner, Dunn, and Salisbury. Collectively, these centers support one of the largest grocery supply chains on the East Coast, utilizing over 8,000 transportation assets and logging more than 125 million miles annually.
Ahold Delhaize USA, a division of the global food retailer Ahold Delhaize, encompasses five omnichannel grocery brands: Food Lion, The Giant Co., Giant Food, Hannaford, and Stop & Shop. Together, these brands represent the largest grocery retail group on the East Coast and the fourth largest in the nation, serving 26 million customers each week.
