ASC Joins Executive Committee of EU Market Advisory Council
Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) has recently been appointed as an Other Interest Group (OIG) and nominated to the Executive Committee of the Market Advisory Council (MAC). This marks a crucial advancement in ASC’s involvement with European Union market and policy frameworks.
Understanding the Market Advisory Council
The MAC was established under the EU Common Fisheries Policy. It serves as a platform for a diverse range of stakeholders within the fisheries and aquaculture sector. The council’s primary objective is to provide structured, balanced advice to the European Commission and EU Member States on market-oriented aspects of fishery and aquaculture products. The insights and recommendations from the MAC are essential for effective market policy implementation and regulatory development within the EU.
ASC’s Vision and Commitment
ASC’s CEO, Chris Ninnes, expressed his enthusiasm about the new role, stating, “ASC’s nomination to the Executive Committee of the Market Advisory Council signifies our recognition as a credible and constructive voice in the EU seafood and aquaculture markets. This role equips us with a stronger platform to share evidence-based insights on sustainability, market dynamics, and regulatory effectiveness. Furthermore, it enhances our collaboration with EU institutions and stakeholders to bolster a transparent and resilient European seafood market.”
ASC’s Active Engagement in EU Seafood Policy
Having been an active member of the MAC for the past two years, ASC’s recent nomination to the Executive Committee underscores its acknowledged expertise and representative capacity in discussions about the EU seafood and aquaculture markets. The Executive Committee, comprising up to 25 members, plays a pivotal role in steering the MAC’s strategy, shaping its annual work schedule, and providing substantial advice to the European Commission.
In its new capacity, ASC will contribute directly to influencing the MAC’s agenda, crafting its positions, and ensuring that sustainability is a focal point in EU market governance. This appointment also fortifies ASC’s capacity to regularly engage with the European Commission Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries and work alongside other committee members from various sectors, including renowned organizations like the Marine Stewardship Council, the Environmental Justice Foundation, OCEANA, and the World Wide Fund for Nature.
Looking Ahead
ASC is eager to play a constructive role within the MAC, driving balanced and forward-thinking solutions that support the long-term sustainability of the EU seafood and aquaculture sector.
