Belgium is grappling with a significant decline in egg production, exacerbated by the recent phase-out of enriched cages in response to stricter animal welfare regulations. As the annual demand for eggs continues to rise, Belgium is no longer able to maintain self-sufficiency in this essential food source.
Supply Down, Demand Up
According to the sector organization Landsbond Pluimvee, “Supply is declining rapidly while the demand for eggs increases year upon year.” The shift in consumer preferences towards eggs, perceived as a healthier alternative to meat, is notable. With increased awareness about cholesterol and the rise of flexible dietary practices, the demand for eggs is expected to continue on this upward trajectory.
Challenges of Unfair Competition
Landsbond Pluimvee raises concerns about unfair competition posed by countries such as Ukraine and Brazil. The organization questions whether consumers want a staple product like eggs increasingly sourced from regions where regulations regarding animal welfare and environmental standards are not rigorously enforced.
Near Peak Prices and Economic Implications
The Belgian producers’ union suggests that egg prices are on the verge of peaking. Currently, brown free-range eggs of 62.5 grams are selling for 18.46 euro cents—almost 300% higher than five years ago. The traditional pre-Christmas price surge is further intensified this year due to global outbreaks of avian influenza.
“While we might be nearing a price peak, the return to past low prices is unlikely,” notes Landsbond Pluimvee. Despite rising costs, eggs remain an affordable protein source, priced at approximately €3.20 per kg, considerably cheaper than chicken, which costs €9.70 per kg.
Consumer preferences are shifting towards eggs over meat, and it is imperative for policymakers to heed the signals from the industry to ensure food security and animal welfare in Belgium.
