Iceland Foods Introduces World-First MSC-Certified Red Shrimp
Iceland Foods has made a significant leap in sustainable seafood by becoming the first retailer globally to launch its own-label Marine Stewardship Council (MSC)-certified frozen Argentinian Red Shrimp product. This innovative offering underscores the retailer’s commitment to providing UK consumers with seafood that is responsibly sourced.
New Product Launch Details
The new product, Wild Red Shrimp in Tomato & Chilli Sauce, is priced at £5 or two for £8 and is available in 190 Food Warehouse stores across the UK beginning on 10th September.
A Groundbreaking Achievement
This launch represents a global milestone following the MSC certification of the Argentine Red Shrimp (Pleoticus muelleri) Fishery earlier this year. In March 2025, the fishery achieved MSC certification, becoming Argentina’s first coastal shrimp fishery to meet stringent sustainability standards after over a decade of dedication and improvements.
Expanding Sustainability Initiatives
Iceland Foods has significantly expanded its MSC-certified product range, increasing from 30 to 46 items between April 2023 and April 2024, which now covers 73% of its seafood lines. This accomplishment positions Iceland as the second-highest UK supermarket for MSC product coverage, as noted in the MSCs UK and Ireland 2024 Market Report.
Variety of Sustainable Seafood Options
Customers can find an extensive array of MSC-certified options at Iceland, including:
- Wild Pink Salmon Fillets
- Large North Atlantic Prawns
- Breaded Fish Fingers
- Battered Haddock Fillets
- Fish Pie
Statements from the Experts
Stuart Lendrum, Director of Product, Process and Sustainability at Iceland Foods, expressed pride in this achievement, stating:
“We are proud to be the first retailer to bring MSC-certified Argentinian red shrimp under our own brand to our customers. This is an amazing product, but also an important milestone for sustainable seafood. At Iceland, we believe great quality shouldn’t come at the expense of our oceans, and we’re proud to support fisheries that are driving meaningful, long-term change.”
George Clark, MSC UK and Ireland Programme Director, also commented on the significance of this certification:
“The certification of the Argentine Red Shrimp Fishery is the result of more than a decade of hard work and commitment to sustainable practices. To now see this product available to UK shoppers with Iceland is a fantastic achievement and great recognition of the fishery’s hard work. By choosing seafood with the MSC ecolabel and ‘Buying Blue’, customers can enjoy great-tasting fish while protecting dinner for future generations and help to safeguard the future of our oceans.”
Supporting Sustainable Seafood September
This announcement coincides with the MSC’s Sustainable Seafood September ‘Buy Blue, Protect Dinner campaign, which encourages consumers to opt for seafood products marked with the blue MSC ecolabel throughout September and beyond. As part of this initiative, MSC-certified seafood pasta, including the red shrimp, emphasizes the simplicity and tastiness of making sustainable choices at home.
About the Marine Stewardship Council
