Rangen Pioneers U.S. Aquaculture with First ASC Feed Certification
Rangen Aquaculture Nutrition, located in Idaho’s Magic Valley, has made history by becoming the first facility in the United States to achieve ASC Feed Certification. This achievement aims to drive responsible aquaculture practices across the nation, marking a significant milestone in the U.S. aquafeed industry.
Setting a New Standard in Aquaculture
The feed mill in Buhl is now authorized to produce feed for a variety of species, including freshwater trout, salmon, seriola, cobia, shrimp, and tilapia. Recognizing that feed plays a crucial role in the seafood farming sector, Rangen’s certification emphasizes the importance of using responsibly sourced and produced ingredients. This commitment not only enhances environmental and social performance but also supports the increasing demand for high-quality aquaculture products.
Driving Sustainable Change
“Rangen achieving the first ASC Feed Certification in the United States is a significant step for the U.S. aquaculture sector,” remarked Aisla Jones, Feed Engagement Manager at the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC). “This certification symbolizes a pioneering effort in responsible sourcing and production. By embedding sustainability at the core of aquaculture practices, Rangen is helping to foster a more transparent and trusted seafood industry.”
Commitment to Quality and Sustainability
According to Carrington Gorman, Director of Aquaculture at Rangen Inc., “Our commitment to delivering nutritionally rich solutions from hatch to harvest aligns closely with the ASC’s principles. With decades of expertise, Rangen adheres to strict quality control standards, making us an industry leader among American feed companies. The ASC Feed Standard signifies our compliance with the world’s stringent requirements, ensuring that our products are both nutritious and environmentally sustainable.”
A Seamless Integration of Standards
The ASC Feed Standard and the ASC Farm Standard work collaboratively to promote responsible aquaculture. While the ASC Farm Standard focuses on environmental and social responsibility at aquaculture farms, the Feed Standard governs the sourcing and production of feed ingredients. Notably, from October 31, 2025, ASC-certified farms will be required to utilize ASC-conforming feed from certified mills, making Rangen’s certification especially timely for U.S. producers preparing for this transition.
A Vision for the Future
Rangen’s significant accomplishment underscores the momentum of sustainable aquaculture in the United States and establishes the country’s potential to spearhead responsible seafood production globally.
Understanding the ASC Feed Standard
The ASC Feed Standard is the first of its kind to impose binding global criteria for all feed ingredients, including fishmeal, fish oil, and various plant-based materials such as soy and palm oil. Companies must prove that these ingredients are sourced from responsibly managed fisheries or sustainable agricultural practices.
