This week’s sale at the Roma Saleyards saw a substantial offering of over 7,700 head of cattle, indicating a continued trend in seasonal weaner offloads.
Vibrant Market Activity
The cool morning prompted an influx of cattle, with enthusiastic bidding from regular processors, backgrounders, and feedlotters. The yarding primarily consisted of cattle sourced from the local supply district, including Roma, Amby, Jackson, and Mungallala, with some cattle also coming from Julia Creek, Cloncurry, Tibooburra, and Cossack.
Highlighted Sales
Deane Grazing Company showcased a run of Droughtmaster cross steers, heifers, and bulls, including 231 Droughtmaster cross cows.
The Droughtmaster cross bullocks, averaging 380c/kg, weighed 602kg, yielding a return of $2,337/head, with the heaviest pen reaching 613kg for a similar return.

John Russell from ‘Culbara’ also presented an impressive line of Charolais cross, Angus cross, and Droughtmaster cross steers, averaging 444c/kg at a weight of 277kg for a return of $1,226/head. Some Charolais cross steers reached 470c/kg for a 259kg weight, yielding $1,215/head.

Maunder Pastoral Co also had a noteworthy offering, with 216 Charolais cross steers averaging 441c/kg at a weight of 320kg for a return of $1,414/head. Top pens reached 455c/kg at 274kg, while heavier pens sold at 414c/kg for 366kg.
NLRS Commentary
The sale, marked by local frosts, saw all regular processors, feedlotters, and backgrounders present. Although the market remained firm to slightly easy, bullocks and heavy grown steers showed resilience with stronger support.
Yearling Steers Summary
Yearling steers were varied across weight categories, with prices ranging:
- 200 to 280kg: 300c to 470c/kg
- 280 to 330kg: topped at 462c/kg, averaging 428c/kg
- 330 to 400kg: made to 459c/kg
- 400 to 480kg: dropped to 400c/kg
- Over 480kg: topped at 376c/kg
Heifer Prices
Heifers couldn’t maintain previous levels either, with significant comparisons:
- 200 to 280kg: 208c to 378c/kg
- 280 to 330kg: topped at 372c/kg
- 330 to 400kg: predominantly 200c to 334c/kg
- 400 to 480kg: averaged 335c/kg
- Over 480kg: reached 350c/kg
Additional Observations
Heifers under 200kg and various weights of cows showed varied pricing trends, with cows over 600kg topping at 310c/kg.
