Weekly Cattle Sale Report from Roma Saleyards

This week’s sale at the Roma Saleyards marked a significant rise in cattle numbers, with an increase of over 2500 head compared to the previous week’s Tuesday sale. Despite the cooler morning temperatures, buyers were actively participating in the auction.
Regular buyers, including feedlotters and backgrounders, thronged the venue to compete for more than 6,400 head of cattle. The quality and variety on offer were noted to be impressive.
Cattle were sourced from several regions, encompassing western areas such as Blackall, Morven, Quilpie, Tambo, and Windorah, along with the eastern regions like Dulacca, Condamine, Hannaford, Meandarra, and Miles.
Within the Maranoa supply district, consignments included cattle from Injune, Mitchell, Roma, Surat, and Yuleba, while southern regions of Queensland added cattle from Bollon, Dirranbandi, and St George. Cattle were also consigned from Coonamble in New South Wales, maintaining continuity from previous sales.
M.F. Gadsby of ‘Rocky Hills’, Morven, sold a pen of Angus steers, achieving a remarkable 486c/kg for a weight of 321kg, resulting in a total return of $1,560/hd through Ray White Rural Roma.

FG & R Dunn’s steers.
FG & R Dunn sold two pens of Santa Gertrudis cross steers and one pen of Angus cross steers, all at an impressive 540c/kg. Operating out of ‘Megine’, Roma, the heaviest Santa Gertrudis pen weighed 304kg and garnered $1,645/hd, while the Angus cross steers weighed 266kg, yielding $1,439/hd, consigned through Grant Daniel and Long Roma.

DC Diamond Past Co’s steers.
DC Diamond Past Co, based in ‘Mirri Mirri’, Hannaford, sold steers for 520c/kg, averaging 264kg, accumulating $1,375/hd. In addition, two pens of Angus cross steers sold at 514c/kg, with the heaviest pen weighing 277kg and earning $1,426/hd. A pen of Charolais cross steers fetched an impressive 536c/kg, weighing 288kg and returning $1,544/hd.
Alcurah Creek Grazing offered steers averaging 304kg, achieving 503c/kg and a total of $1,530/hd. One pen of Charolais cross steers fetched 516c/kg, weighing 289kg at $1,494/hd. Heifers were also consigned, selling at 381c/kg and averaging 289kg for $1,106/hd, with a pen of Charolais cross heifers reaching 394c/kg for 308kg at $1,214/hd, consigned via PJH Livestock & Property.
NLRS Commentary:
With an uptick in numbers, agents at Roma yarded 6,473 head. The cattle showcased varying conditions, particularly those from the south, making regular buyer support significant in maintaining quality standards.

Yearling steers under 200kg topped at 548c/kg for restockers while those in the 200-280kg range sold to 540c/kg. Yearling steers between 280-330kg made around 540c/kg, averaging 487c/kg for restockers, while those 330-400kg held firm at 506c/kg. Weight ranges continued with steer 400-480kg selling between 325c to 462c and 478c for lot feeders.
Yearling heifers under 200kg reached 342c/kg for restockers, with competitive pricing appearing across various weights with slight price fluctuations. Notably, grown steers over 400kg defied trends, achieving up to 456c/kg for lot feeders.
