Surge in Cattle Yarding at Roma Sale: A Comprehensive Report

This week’s sale saw a remarkable increase in cattle numbers, reaching a total of 7521 head penned for auction. This surge follows last week’s increased yarding.
Among the wide variety of consignments available, there was a solid offering of bullocks, feeders, and prime cows. Regular buyers, including lotfeeders and backgrounders, actively participated in the auction, with cattle sourced from across Australia.
The yarding included supplies from regions as distant as South Australia and local areas of the Maranoa district, specifically Injune, Mitchell, Mungallala, Roma, Surat, and Wallumbilla. Additionally, cattle were supplied from the Western Downs regions, including Dulacca and Wandoan, as well as locations in western Queensland like Adavale, Augathella, Barcaldine, Tambo, and Wyandra, and Coonamble in New South Wales.
Notable Sales
LJ & SG Hanna presented a run of Santa Gertrudis steers, achieving a price of 534c/kg, averaging 362kg and netting $1,936/hd.
Operating from ‘Terrarara’ in Mitchell, two pens of Santa Gertrudis steers sold for 548c/kg, with the heaviest pen at 364kg and earning $1,997/hd. Another pen reached 550c/kg at 317kg, resulting in $1,744/hd.

Andromeda Cattle Co from Mungallala also had notable sales with steers at 517c/kg weighing 289kg for $1,494/hd. They managed to sell two pens of Charolais cross steers for 566c/kg, with the heaviest at 308kg in total of $1,748/hd, alongside Brahman cross steers at 532c/kg weighing 295kg, equating to $1,573/hd.
Market Commentary
According to NLRS commentary, the increase in cattle numbers at Roma was driven by a robust demand from NSW and southern Queensland. The yarding included healthy runs of feeders and bullocks, with market prices reflecting quality variations.
As for yearlings, steers under 200kg sold for up to 532c/kg to restockers, while those between 200 to 280kg hit 576c/kg. The trend continued with 280 to 330kg at a range of 300-562c/kg. The best performance was seen in yearlings over 480kg, which declined slightly, reaching 440c/kg.
Yearling heifers also followed an upward trend under 200kg made up to 320c/kg, with those between 200-280kg reaching 430c/kg. However, prices for heavier heifers were slightly lower in comparison to previous sales.
Processor demand seemed to stabilize for grown steers, achieving up to 450c/kg, while the cow market experienced a notable drop in prices.

This week, a total of 7521 head of cattle were distributed at Roma’s Store Sale on Tuesday. Weaner steers under 200kg peaked at 532c/kg with an average of 462c/kg. Similarly, steers in the 200-280kg category reached 576c/kg, averaging 497c/kg.
Top sales included Santa Gertrudis cross steers by Fitzpatrick Family Farming sold for 574c/kg, and Santa Gertrudis cross heifers reaching a top of 418c/kg, averaging $1,029.
