Trident Aqua Services Launches Scotland’s Largest Wellboat, Inter Alba
Trident Aqua Services has officially welcomed Scotland’s largest wellboat into its fleet. The Inter Alba, a 93-meter live fish carrier, was delivered from Sefine Shipyard in December 2025. After entering operation, Inter Alba successfully completed its initial work period, showcasing its capabilities in providing both freshwater and fish lice treatment. With a well capacity of approximately 6,500 cubic meters, Inter Alba stands as the largest wellboat currently operating in Scotland.
Innovative Design for Enhanced Fish Welfare
Designed by Salt Ship Design AS, Inter Alba emphasizes fish welfare through careful handling and adherence to high biosecurity standards. A notable feature of the vessel is its substantial battery package, which, alongside a heat-recovery system and other efficiency measures, greatly reduces fuel consumption and carbon emissions. Furthermore, the advanced fish-handling system, supplied by MMC First Process, includes an industry-leading freshwater production capability, capable of generating 15,000 m³ of freshwater daily, thanks to a large-scale reverse osmosis plant from Peter Taboada.
Commitment to Sustainable Aquaculture
“We are thrilled to see Inter Alba delivered and operational in Scotland,” said Arild Aasmyr, CEO of Trident Aqua Services. “This vessel signifies a pivotal milestone for our company, enhancing our diverse fleet and enriching our service offerings. The addition of Inter Alba bolsters our commitment to the Scottish market, allowing us to meet the specific needs of our customers.”
Equipped with high-capacity freshwater treatment systems, including FLS delousing solutions from Flatsetsund Engineering, Inter Alba is engineered to perform gentle combinational treatments. This capability is crucial for Mowi Scotland in managing biological challenges such as sea lice and pNeoparamoeba perurans, a parasite linked to amoebic gill disease (AGD). As AGD has become more common in Scottish waters, especially with rising winter sea temperatures, Inter Alba’s freshwater treatments offer a natural and effective solution by altering osmotic balance and dismantling the amoeba.
Enhancing Operational Efficiency and Fish Health
“This vessel is a significant enhancement to our operations,” stated Ben Hadfield, COO of Farming Scotland, Ireland, and Faroes at Mowi Scotland. “The freshwater treatment capacity improves our ability to maintain fish health, welfare, and overall product quality. The prompt operational debut of Inter Alba is already contributing to more efficient daily operations, significantly reducing the reliance on licensed veterinary medicines in our salmon aquaculture practices.”
