Global Initiative for Savanna Fire Management: UN Calls for Input from Land Managers
Eligible woody savannas where this methodology is applicable
The United Nations is urging land managers across northern Australia to contribute their insights to a pioneering global savanna fire management methodology. This innovative framework is the brainchild of Maki Planet Systems, an Australian-based climate technology firm, and aims to implement savanna fire management practices worldwide.
This announcement follows a significant commitment from over 50 countries during COP30, held from November 10-21, 2025, in Brazil, which focused on enhancing integrated fire management and wildfire resilience.
A Holistic Approach to Fire Management
The proposed methodology draws inspiration from Australia’s successful savanna fire practices, combining traditional Indigenous knowledge with modern scientific policy to mitigate wildfire risks. It aims to deliver essential benefits to various stakeholders, particularly those in the most remote areas of the globe.
“This innovative approach is not just about controlling fires; it offers a framework to credit reductions of methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from prescribed early dry-season burning,” explained Robin Gonzalez, Head of Carbon Services at Maki Planet Systems. “The methodology represents over a decade of scientific advancement and real-world application tailored for international contexts.”
Benefits of the New Methodology
The methodology aims to quantify emission reductions by shifting fire regimes in woody savanna ecosystems from intense, late dry-season wildfires to earlier, cooler, and more controlled burns. This transition is anticipated to unlock new opportunities for communities and land stewards, allowing them to participate in carbon markets while reinforcing cultural fire management and fostering long-term climate resilience.
As a call to action, all land managers in the relevant regions, along with members of the Integrated Fire Management community, are encouraged to provide their input before the consultation period concludes on December 11, 2025.
